Caroline Flack’s mother said TV presenters needed improvements in the “duty of care” because of the level of “exposure.”
Christine explained that it was “ironic” that her late daughter, who hosts the hugely popular ITV Love Island show, was “wrongly fired” from her role when her own love life was in turmoil.
Caroline took her own life on February 15, 2020, at the age of 40, a day after hearing that the Royal Prosecution Service would launch a trial for the alleged attack on her boyfriend Lewis Burton in December 2019.
Tragic: Caroline Flack’s mother, Christine, says TV presenters need a “better duty of care” after she was “wrongly fired” for her role in Presenting Love Island
Speaking to The Sun, Christine explained: “The duty to care for presenters needs to be better. If you work in an office, you are protected, but you are not on television, you are exposed.
“The island of love is thriving on controversy and probably still is, I haven’t seen it since. But when it came to Caroline, they fired her for her love life. It was completely wrong.
“I watched it because Carrie was in it and I liked it because she absolutely liked it. She loved the crew and the racers. It was ironic when her love life was in trouble.

Last month, Love Island producers said contestants would be provided with inclusion training, 24-hour access to mental health experts and individual guidance on how to deal with instant fame as part of an extensive care package implemented before the latest series.
The popular ITV2 show returned to Mallorca for the eighth series in June, and the producers ensured that the latest Singleton harvest received many professional guidelines as part of their care protocol – before, during and after their stay at the Spanish villa.
Prior to this series, contestants will be offered video training and guidance covering appropriate inclusive language on disability, sexuality, race and ethnicity, as well as general behavior and micro-aggression.
Support: She explained: “The duty to care for leaders needs to be better. If you work in an office, you are protected, but you are not on TV, you are exposed. ”
Preliminary psychological and medical assessments are also needed, including examinations by an independent doctor, psychological counselor and reports from each islander’s GP to verify their relevant medical history.
Discussions are designed to address topics including inclusive language, behavior, creating safe spaces, and a good ally.
In addition, future islanders will watch a video made by the show’s executive producer and head of social welfare, interviewing former islanders about their experience on the show.
This includes details of the two weeks before entering the villa, how to deal with filming 24 hours a day, the interaction they will have with the producers in the villa, the support provided to family members, dealing with trolling on social media and adapting to life away from the show.

The cast will also be told that they need to consider all the potential consequences of participating in the show – in particular the negative feedback they may receive on social media – and work through this decision-making process with their families.
Caroline’s death was declared suicide in an investigation in August 2020 with Coroner Mary Hassel, saying: “The key decision I have to make is whether Caroline took her own life …
“I must be pleased that she acted in the way that caused her death and, secondly, that she intended to cause her death.
“In Caroline’s case, I’m quite pleased that she intended to cause her own death.” She hung herself. She had only one expectation – her own death. There is no doubt in my mind at all.
The medical examiner said Flak had experienced “variable deteriorating health” and was “upset” at the thought of facing trial.

She said: “Caroline had variable mental health, she had struggled in the past. She had difficulties …
“Despite the fact that she may have led – to some – a fascinating life, in fact, the more famous she became, the more some of these difficulties increased – she had to deal with the media in a way that most of us don’t. do ….
“It was played out in the national press – and it was incredibly difficult for her. She was faced with the prospect of not working in the job she loved, of losing a lot …
“I find that the reason she took her own life was that now she knew she was being persecuted for sure and she knew she would face the media, the press, the public – everything would fall on her. For me, this is the essence.

In conclusion, the investigator registered a death by suicide caused by hanging.
Ms Hassel said: “Caroline hanged herself at home on the morning of February 15 due to an exacerbation of changing ill health and suffering.”
