A spot in the Memorial Cup final is on the line as Shawinigan Cataractes face host Saint John Sea Dogs on Saturday.
The Sea Dogs (1-0-1-0, four points) need to win the regulations to get their championship ticket on Wednesday, while anything but three points will lead them to play in Monday’s semifinals against the Hamilton Bulldogs, who retained his seat with a win over Edmonton Oil Kings on Friday night. One point for Shawinigan (2-0-0-0, six points) means they will play for the second Memorial Cup in franchise history.
Watch Saturday’s live final round at 16:00 ET / 13: 00 PT on TSN1, TSN.ca, the TSN app and on TSN Direct.
QMJHL champion Cataract received three points from the Edmonton Oilers’ prospect Xavier Burgo and Dallas Stars 2020 first-round winner Maurice Burke in a 3-2 victory over the OHL Bulldogs on Thursday night. Winger Olivier Nado, selected by the Buffalo Sabers in the fourth round last year, added a goal and an assist, while Cataract goalkeeper Antoine Coulomb stopped 38 of 40 shots in the victory.
The Sea Dogs came out after a 4-3 loss to the Oil Kings on Wednesday night when Jackson Weibe of Edmonton scored his first hat-trick, with the third goal counting as the winner in overtime. Ravis Christians Ansons, Josh Lawrence and William Dufour scored for Sea Dogs, who scored three consecutive goals in the first period to clear the deficit of two results before the equalizer of Weibe and a possible winner later in the evening.
St. John finished third in the QMJHL during the regular season (47-17-1-3), while Shauinigan was seventh (40-24-1-3), but managed the table in the QMJHL playoffs, winning the Jean-Rougeau trophy with a victory in a 4-1 series over the Charlottetown Islanders earlier this month.
Canceled each of the previous two seasons due to COVID-19, the four-team tournament sees the winners of the three major Canadian youth leagues and the home team play for the Memorial Cup championship.
