Floods in Manitoba: Gimli deals with land floods

Gimli residents are coping with land floods due to high water levels in Lake Winnipeg and strong winds.

Lynn Greenberg, mayor of Gimli’s RM, said the wind was blowing water on people’s properties.

“Each of our drainage pipes is clogged then because the water is higher than the drainage pipes in some cases. So it always causes us problems when that happens, “he said.

Greenberg said he had heard that some people were dealing with land floods in his property and had heard reports of water entering people’s homes.

He added that at least several people had also been evacuated from their homes due to high water levels.

Community teams are also working to build a dike at one of the main drainage pipes to ensure that it can drain properly so that more water does not accumulate.

One factor that can help the community is wind, according to Greenberg.

“If we get winds that push, say, from the west and push the water to the east, then that creates a problem for the people on the other side of the lake. The wind can change and can help us for a while.”

Greenberg said sandbags were available for residents who needed it, and congratulated the community service team on helping the community deal with the latest flood problem.

The province also announced that Highway 329 east of Riverton was closed due to water on the road.

CTV News also asked the provincial government for comment and is awaiting a response.
