The Montreal Fire Department (SIM) is advising citizens to avoid the Sherbrooke St. East near Durocher Ave. as a large fire broke out in an industrial building.
SIM issued its first alarm around 10:30 a.m. Sunday and a fifth alarm sounded within 45 minutes.
SIM spokesman Matthew Griffin said the fire appeared to have exploded in a pile of materials at the building’s recycling center. Since then, the fire has spread throughout the building and there has been a partial collapse of the structure.
“That’s why we’re in a defensive state right now,” Griffith said.
About 150 firefighters are on the scene and no one was injured.

Montreal Police (SPVM) is on site, assisting and directing traffic.
Sherbrooke St. is closed between Broadway Ave. and Joseph-Versailles Blvd. Drivers are advised to take the Notre-Dame St. East so as not to get stuck in the area.
The electricity was cut off in the area during the operation.
Police said firefighters were working to contain the blaze and there was no danger of it spreading to nearby refineries.
Griffith said the fire would probably burn by evening.
