A 15-year-old boy who died after being stabbed in Miles Platting has been identified by Greater Manchester police as Jakub Szymanski.

A 44-year-old man was arrested in Kent on Friday night on suspicion of murder after a teenager was stabbed to death and his mother was injured at a home in Manchester, police confirmed.

His mother – locally known as Katarzyna Bastek – was also treated for severe stab wounds at the property on Poor Drive. Bastek, 40, was taken to hospital and remains in stable condition.

Jacob – known to his family as Cuba – was reportedly attacked while trying to protect his mother.

A family statement released by police said: “Jacob was known with love as Cuba to his family and Jacob to his friends. He has always been a popular child, making friends wherever he goes, thanks to his friendly and talkative nature.

“He always said his opinion, he was naughty, funny and cheeky boy. He loved his Xbox and football, supporting Manchester City.

“He was like any other teenager and was useful to so many people, even those he had just met. He is our hero to our family. ”

Police said the arrested man from Manchester is believed to be known to the victims. Officers were called by colleagues from the Northwest Ambulance at around 9.30pm on Thursday following the Miles Platting home accident.

The 15-year-old was treated on the spot for stab wounds before being taken to hospital, where he died about an hour later, the forces said.

DCI’s Alicia Smith, of the Greater Manchester Police Incident Team, said: “We are still continuing our investigation and last night’s arrest was a huge step in potentially getting the grieving family the answers they so desperately need.”
