A woman died after a crash that shut down M1 for most of yesterday. The collision affected a car that came out of the north lane and hit a tree near Leicester.
The road was closed from about 10.45 am until last night, while the police and other emergency services dealt with the incident, and the investigators of the accident carried out a full inspection of the scene. There were long queues on the northern M1, and the southern side was also closed for two short periods during the day.
The accident happened north of intersection 21a. There were impacts on other roads in Leicester and elsewhere, as M1 traffic was diverted via the A46 and A50 to rejoin junction 22.

Leicestershire police are calling for witnesses – especially those who may have footage showing the crash or the M1 vehicle. Detective Charlotte Wright of the Serious Clashes Investigation Department said: “Unfortunately, our investigations are now focused on a fatal collision.

“While we were talking to a number of people, I would still ask anyone who traveled on the highway yesterday morning to see what happened or who has a record of the incident from a board to come out.
“I would also like to talk to anyone who has seen the black Ford Mondeo before the collision.
The driver of the Ford was also taken to hospital with injuries. He is said to be in stable condition in hospital. You can pass information to the police through their website here, quoting incident May 213. Another option is to call 101.
