A 5-month-old baby was killed when a car was shot when a bullet hit her in the head while she was sitting in her father’s car on Friday night, police said.
Baby Cecilia Thomas was in a car shortly after 6 p.m., when a second car approached and opened fire on the vehicle, fatally hitting it in the head, WLS-TV reported.
A business owner in the area said Cecilia’s father stopped the car when he heard his daughter crying.
She was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, officials said.
A 41-year-old man in a separate car was registered at the University of Chicago Hospital with a gunshot wound to the eye, police said. He is in good condition.
No suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made.
At least a dozen grieving relatives gathered in front of Comer Children’s Hospital.
A hospital nurse who introduced herself as Jackie told the publication: “I have never seen anything like this in my 61 years of life.

She lost two of her own sons to violence, and another son was paralyzed after being shot.
“You never know what it’s like to have a broken heart until you go through it,” she said.
The baby’s mother told a rescuer that her daughter was returning to her during the shooting.

“This is a 5-month-old baby. “She carried this baby for nine months, fed this baby,” Andrew Holmes told WLS-TV. “And it takes a damn fool to fire that weapon and take the baby’s life.”
According to statistics from the Chicago Police Department, there have been 282 homicides and 1,148 shooting incidents so far this year, down from 11% and 17% respectively over the same period last year.
