A boy from Quebec, 9, started a gardening business with a domestic pig

He may be only nine, but Sebastian Coburn has already succeeded in his first business venture called Beastie Gardening.

“Weeding, weeding and removing annoying poison ivy,” Coburn said.

The West Quebec entrepreneur has a little help from his eight-week-old mini piglet named Beastie Boy.

“Gardening with Beastie” came from a brainstorming session with mother Miranda Dyke, who commissioned her four children to come up with a summer business.

“He came up with the design, the logo, he made up the name. He makes all the reservations, “said Dyke.

For $ 20 an hour, Coburn and Beastie Boy help clean up the garden, prepare it for planting, much to the delight of its customers.

“Forget weeding, I want to play with the pig,” said Cantley, Que. resident Nicole Tischler, who hired Coburn and Beastie Boy to deal with weeds in her backyard.

The team comes with their shovels and gloves and after a little digging, then comes Beastie Boy.

“[He] “Roots around with your nose, gets some of the insects, gets some of the roots … and it’s also really great at clearing dandelions,” Dyke said.

This business started a little over a week ago, initially focusing on Gatineau, Que. area, but due to high demand, the business expanded to Ottawa and the surrounding region.

“I mean, it’s a little cool to have a piglet in my backyard,” said Hatton Thompson, who lives in Orleans.

“It’s a great experience for my kids to see another kid start a business,” said Thompson’s mother, Lee.

The success of his business forced Coburn to hire his mother, his siblings and some friends to keep up with the calls.

“I can’t believe how successful it was,” Dyke said. “I thought people might need to clean their gardens for the long May weekend. We now have reservations until next week. “

This means that employees will need a break … even if it is ultimately a nap at work.

“He usually faints most of the time,” Coburn said. “But we manage to get the job done.”
