A British woman was raped “in front of her husband” on a beach in Goa

A British tourist was raped on holiday in India in front of her partner, local media reported.

Senior police investigators say the woman was on a beach in Goa when she was attacked by a man on June 2nd. The woman filed a formal complaint Monday (June 6th) after consulting with her family and the British Embassy in India, it said.

Police said yesterday they had arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly raping a woman in the famous Sweet Lake in North Goa.

The man is accused of raping the woman under the pretext of massaging her while she was with her husband. He is said to be part of a group that offers illegal massages near the popular tourist spot on Arambol Beach, according to local media.

A senior police officer told NDTV that the accused had also worked as a school librarian in the past. “We contacted the relevant police department to get his previous files. He is not currently working as a librarian, “the official said.

According to the information, the victim and the accused were sent to hospital for a medical examination.

A spokesman for the UK Foreign Office said: “We provide consular support to a British citizen in Goa.”

Nearly 300,000 Britons visited Goa in 2018, according to the latest figures, with UK travelers being the second largest foreign group to holiday in the region. The tropical weather of Goa and the fantastic beaches are the main attraction for holidaymakers.
