A California man accused of attempting to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Cavanaugh was formally charged Wednesday.
A grand federal jury has returned charges against 26-year-old Nicholas John Roske in an assassination attempt on a United States judge.

According to court documents, Roske was traveling from his home in Simi Valley, California, to Maryland with the intention of killing Judge Cavanaugh, arriving at his residence in the early morning hours of Thursday, June 8, 2022.
Roske spotted two U.S. marshals guarding the house and headed in the other direction, calling 911 to say he had suicidal thoughts and also planning to kill Cavanaugh, court documents said.

Charges against Roske include confiscation of a firearm, two cartridges loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition from each 9mm ammunition, 17 rounds of ammunition contained in a plastic bag, a black speed loader and other items intended to be used to commit the crime.

Roske’s initial appearance in court is not yet scheduled. If convicted, Roske faces a maximum sentence of life in federal prison.
