A father kills the child’s mother before fatally shooting a small child, himself, says GBI

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Sunday that Covington’s 1-year-old girl at the Amber Alert Center and the suspect accused of kidnapping her have died.

Officials said the Newton County sheriff was investigating after 1-year-old Jacuari Bennett was abducted on Saturday at the home of Chandler Field Drive in Newton County.

Newton County Sheriff said 38-year-old Darain Jawaris Bennett, the father of the young child, shot and killed the child’s mother at the home. The child’s grandmother was also injured when she told police that Daryn Bennett had taken the child.

The young child and the suspect are believed to be traveling in a black Honda Accord. If you see them, call 911.

Newton County Sheriff’s Office said Daryne Bennett called to tell police he was with the baby at Riverdale Road Church and Adams Drive in Clayton County, threatening to harm the child and himself.

The sheriff’s office said the man shot the child before pointing the gun at himself.

Authorities warned earlier that they were probably traveling in a black 2007 Honda Accord RGJ4146.

The GBI confirmed the death of a young child in a tweet on Sunday.

The black Honda Accord, which the suspect was driving, was still at the scene on Sunday morning.

Investigators are expected to provide more details during a press conference at 11:30 a.m. at the Newton County Victims’ Home.

Chronology of Covington, Georgia, Amber Alert

First, investigators say the 911 came from a home in Covington around 11:14 p.m. Saturday night. Responding deputies then found a shot woman and injured the victim’s mother. She went to the hospital by helicopter. She allegedly told investigators that her granddaughter’s child had abducted her.

Amber signals for a black Honda Accord from Covington came out overnight.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office said the child’s father called 911 from Clayton County around 7:30 a.m. Sunday and said he would shoot the child and himself. It is not known when officials responded, but officials said the father killed the baby and then himself.
