A fire ravages the Grimsby company Bennetts Timber, but the boss promises to return “bigger and better”

This morning (Saturday) a fire tore down a timber mill owned by one of Grimsby’s longest-running companies.

Bennetts Timber, which has been operating for more than 200 years, is now forced to close its Grimsby repair business. Today, however, the managers promised to return “bigger and better”.

In the early hours of the morning, several fire engines were called to the fire. The mill was badly damaged and will have to be rebuilt, but other buildings have been saved.

Customers were turned down at the South Humberside Industrial Estate this morning when businesses began collecting the pieces. It will be closed until Tuesday for repairs and drainage of water used to extinguish the flames.

Speaking to Grimsby Live today, co-director Edward Bennett said: “It was quite a shock. I was warned of the fire by my brother Robert this morning at about 8 o’clock in the morning. Apparently someone saw the fire and told our operations manager that the mill was on fire.

“Fortunately, all offices, the yard and the warehouse have been preserved and we will look forward to reopening on Tuesday. Obviously, the mill will not work until the next order, as it will have to be restored. “

It was too early to determine what caused the fire, Edward said. He added: “We have no idea what this could cause. We have faced many difficulties in the past and we hope to get bigger and better after that. It happened at the end of the day, and we can’t change that. “

The business has a second depot in Brig, which remains open. Edward said, “It’s all about how we’re going to move forward from here. Our Brigg depot will still be open for calls, as we do not have facilities without IT or power at the moment. ”

One witness told Grimsby Live that the flames appeared at 2 a.m. He added: “I saw the smoke and fire cars, it was also windy, so the fire was well established at that moment.”

In a statement, the Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to the fire at around 1.45am and initially had six fire engines on the scene, as well as our air ladder. We finally left the scene around 8 am.
