A fire that displaced 36 households in Mississauga, Ont. I’m not suspicious

Investigators found that a large fire that tore apart a city complex in Mississauga over the weekend was not suspicious.

The fire broke out Sunday at the Meadowvale Gardens complex at 2869 Battleford Road, near Glen Erin Drive, causing significant damage to 12 units and damage to two dozen others.

The winds blew the flames across a common ceiling, accelerating the spread of the fire.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office said Tuesday that it had already completed an investigation into the scene and returned the site to the property management company.

Fire investigator Jordan Froz told CP24 that the fire started on the balcony on the third floor on the south side of the structure. Although the cause is still being investigated and should be announced in the coming days, he said he was not considered suspicious.

A firefighter was slightly injured in the fight, but no one was injured in the blaze.

Froze said the cleanup is expected to take some time.

He stressed that OFM reminds people how important it is to have working smoke alarms in their homes, as early detection is essential in the event of a fire.

Investigators are still investigating whether the property’s fire alarm system was working. Earlier, the city said the fire alarm system was operational when it was inspected last month.

At least nine families without insurance were assisted by the Red Cross after the fire.

Mississauga Fire said the city’s emergency management team will be on site Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to offer additional assistance to residents.
