A giant inflatable playground and water park could come to the Ottawa River on Petri Island this summer.
Splashifax has announced plans to open a giant outdoor water park in the capital this summer, with dates expected to be announced “in the coming days”.
“We are happy to license space from the city of Ottawa, we can’t thank enough the council and the many city officials who have worked with us in recent months to get to this point,” Splashifax Waterparks CEO Christina Lemieu said in a press release. .
Splashifax says it is working with the city to finalize details, including the exact location, and open this summer.
According to the Splashifax website, the water parks are for adults and children to “immerse themselves in a huge, impressive range of obstacles.”
“Our places are rain or glitter and offer slippery, dripping fun with floating inflatable boats, jumps, slides and our huge unicorn that makes guests laugh as they fall freely into the refreshing water,” the Splashifax website said. “Experience nature and the great outdoors while standing wet 20 feet above the water.”
The council approved a proposal by Matthew Luloff on Wednesday, directing staff to work with Splashifax to negotiate and implement an agreement to set up a water park on Petrie Island Beach.
“There is still a lot of work to be done on this file before it has the potential to move forward,” Luloff told the council, adding that the water park may fail to open this summer.
In a statement to CTV News Ottawa, general manager of leisure, culture and facilities services Don Chenier said the following steps must be taken before Splashifax can open:
- Negotiating and finalizing a work license
- Ensuring approval of Transport Canada
- Completion of the internal city circulation for informing the work license
- Recruitment of Splashifax, certification of staff training
- Approval of the attestation of the staff of the Municipality
- Splashifax presentation of site safety plan, traffic management plan and other requirements
“Additional work is also needed to complete consultations with stakeholders on the site and to determine the market assessment to be attached to the license,” Shenie said.
Splashifax says approximately 30 jobs will be linked to the water park.
