A grandparent and young child have died in a multi-car crash on the A9

Two grandparents and a toddler have died following a multi-vehicle crash in the Highlands.

Emergency services were called to the crash after a red Ford Fiesta and a black Mercedes C Class collided on the A9 at the top of Slochd at around 11.40am on Tuesday.

David McPherson, 68, was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife Elsa McPherson, 64, and their two-year-old grandson were taken to hospital, where they both died a short time later.

The passengers in the black Mercedes, a 67-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman, were taken to hospital after the crash and are in stable condition, according to medical personnel.

The road was closed for nine hours while crash scene investigators investigated the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Sergeant Neil Macdonald, of the road policing unit, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased and the family have asked that their privacy be respected at this time.

“We are conducting extensive inquiries into the circumstances surrounding this incident and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

“In particular, I would ask anyone with dashcam devices to check their footage as it may contain images that may be relevant to our enquiries.”
