A woman from Hamilton, Ont. he is now a multimillionaire after winning the $ 60 million Lotto Max jackpot.
Leah Murdoch-Jerix received the check on Thursday. She bought a $ 5 quick pick ticket from OLG.ca for the April 19 draw.
The $ 60 million payout is the largest ever awarded to a Lotto Max jackpot winner who has purchased his ticket online.
Murdoch-Jerix said she played the lottery carelessly in the last year before the big win.
“Only one ticket is needed. Five bucks, ”Leah Murdoch-Jerix said in front of a room full of reporters as she was handed a news check.
The 58-year-old Hamilton resident said she saw an email from OLG after the April 19 draw, indicating she had won a prize.
However, she didn’t actually open the email until later.
“When I see OLG emails in my inbox, they usually say I won a free game ticket, but that particular email looked different,” she said.
When she opened the email to check the amount of the prize, she said she was “suddenly calm”.
“I did not know what to do next. I couldn’t really understand that this was happening to me. “
After showing her husband’s email, he initially thought she had earned $ 60,000.
After she invited him to take a closer look, the reality of victory emerged.
“At that moment it was clear what he saw! We were both shocked and just looked at each other stunned with disbelief, “she said.
The self-determined housewife said the profits were huge for her and her family.
“My husband is retiring, but not for long,” Murdoch-Jerix joked. He already has a new job: he works for me.
She said one of the best moments after the victory was the expression on her children’s faces after she broke the news.
“I saw the shock on their faces when they realized they could enjoy all the excitement without responsibility,” she laughed.
Murdoch-Jerix said he understands he needs to “use the money wisely” in the long run, but plans to give his family a vacation in the near future.
“I do not see big changes in the near future, because who knows where we will be in a year,” she said. “It’s just an emotional journey that starts with mistrust and grows into excitement. I feel so humble and honored to be in this place right now. ”
