A huge fire at the Nechells recycling plant was declared a major accident

West Midlands fire crews are on the scene of a large fire at a recycling center in Nechels, Birmingham, where thousands of tonnes of cardboard and paper have risen in smoke.

More than 20 pumps and 110 firefighters were present at the scene at the Smurfit Kappa facility, where the fire department said the teams were working “extremely hard”. Locals are urged to keep windows and doors closed while firefighters work to put out the blaze.

The A47 Heartlands Parkway was closed in both directions due to the fire and remains closed outside the city center.

A statement from the Fire Department said: “At 7:40 pm on Sunday, June 12, we were called in an incident on Mount Street, Nechels, Birmingham. This incident involved a large amount of paper and cardboard bales set on fire in a warehouse.

“We currently have more than 20 fire extinguishers – including two aerial hydraulic platforms, a number of fire engines, a large water pumping unit and one of our drones. Crews from West Midlands stations are working extremely hard to deal with the fire with the help of main jets.

“We are working closely with colleagues from the police and ambulance, the Environment Agency, North Trent Water and local staff to bring the incident to a safe conclusion. No casualties were reported. The teams are expected to be present throughout the night. “
