Fifty-nine percent of Americans disapprove of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Rowe against Wade and revoke federal abortion protections, according to a new CBS News / YouGov poll. Among the surveyed women, 67% disapprove.
Why it matters: The new poll confirms what pre-decision polls showed us – that a majority of Americans support Roe.
- 52% call the court’s decision a “step back” for America, 31% say it is a “step forward”, and 17% say neither.
Between the lines: Opinion is strongly divided along party lines. 78% of Republicans approve of the decision, compared to 38% of independents and 17% of Democrats.
What to watch: The public believes that the court will review other civil rights established by precedent.
- 57% believe that the rights of same-sex marriages are likely to be restricted, and 55% believe that access to birth control will be limited.
