A man has been arrested after a cyclist was killed in a collision with an A40 van near Raglan

A cyclist – a woman in her 30s – died in a collision with an A40 van in Monmouthshire on Thursday night, police confirmed.

A 46-year-old man from Abergaven has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by negligent driving and remains in custody, Guent police said. The A40 remained closed, between the gyratory Hardwick and the Raglan roundabout in both directions, until about 5 am.

Police have now launched a witness complaint. In a statement posted on its website late Thursday, Guent police said: “We appeal to witnesses after the A40 crash near Raglan around 7.20pm on Thursday, June 2nd. Officers were present and the clash involved a bicycle and a white Vauxhall Movano van.

“Emergency medics from the Welsh ambulance were also present and confirmed that the cyclist, a woman in her thirties, had died on the spot. Her relatives are informed and receive support from specialists.

“A 46-year-old man from the Abergaven area has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by reckless driving and remains in police custody. The A40 is currently closed between the Hardwick gyratory and the Raglan roundabout in both directions.

“Anyone with information about the collision has been asked to contact us. We ask anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or all drivers with camera footage who used the A40 between 19:00 and 19:30 and between Abergavenny and Raglan, to contact us.
