Chad Bobroski burst into tears and hugged his parents and girlfriend on Wednesday after provincial court judge Gord Wong agreed with Crown Prosecutor Matt Dalidovic to justify a harsh sentence.
Bobroski’s mother also glared at her son’s victim, who was sitting on the other side of the courtroom gallery before a police officer stood up and blocked her gaze.
Wong said there were no mitigating circumstances that would justify a lower sentence than Dalidovic’s.
Defender Gillian Williamson offered a term ranging from three to 3 1/2 years.
Wong said Bobroski, 29, not only sexually assaulted his victim, but did so while inflicting physical harm.
“He should have known that he was harming the complainant,” Wong said, adding that Bobroski had repeatedly raped the victim in a number of ways.

“It simply came to our notice then. I find this particularly aggravating. “
The Calgary man was an all-American swimmer at the University of Southern California and won two gold medals for Canada in the 2011 World Junior Championships.
Williamson said Bobroski’s sentence cost him a lucrative job.
But Wong said that was not a sufficient reason to reduce the sentence, finding that there were no mitigating factors in Bobroski’s favor.
The judge found that there were aggravating circumstances for increasing the sentence from the normal starting point of three years for severe sexual violence.
“There were several sexual acts that took place during the sexual assault,” Wong said.
In addition, Bobroski deliberately inflicted pain on the woman for his own sexual pleasure.

“Transmitting pain is an integral part of sexual violence,” Wong said.
“The action. . . were particularly humiliating and humiliating, including filming a video of sexual violence.
The judge said the loss of Bobroski’s source of income was a natural consequence for many offenders.
“Sentences and convictions change the future of most offenders,” he said.
Wong convicted Bobroski in February, finding the investment banking associate’s claim that the sexual contact he had with the complainant by mutual consent was unbelievable.
Wong said the victim’s testimony left him in no doubt that Bobroski had forced rough sex with the woman after she went to his apartment on December 21, 2018.
