A man was shot and killed Sunday morning on a subway train in Lower Manhattan, police said.
The victim, whose name was not released by police, was shot in the chest around 11:40 a.m. while riding on the North Train Q, which was leaving for Canal Street Station, according to the police department. Authorities did not provide information on the events that led to the shooting.
The fire department said that two people were taken to Bellevue Hospital, but did not provide information about their condition.
The attacker fled at street level and was not detained, police said about an hour after the shooting.
The shooting came less than six weeks after a gunman shot dead 10 people aboard Train R in Brooklyn, leaving dozens more injured in a terrorist attack, officials said.
Violence has highlighted perceptions that the subway is unsafe as the city recovers from a coronavirus pandemic.
Social media users described seeing the shots and people fleeing the train after the late morning shooting.
The shooting prompted transit officials to divert trains N and Q as police investigated the shooting. Officials advised drivers to expect delays on lines E, N, Q and R in both directions, as trains share local tracks.
