A Massachusetts mother has died in a rage while trying to save her young son, who fell into a river and was swept away by the current during a tragic family fishing trip, cops said.
State police and other authorities are still searching the Merimac River on Friday for a 6-year-old boy who fell into the water from Deere Island on Thursday night while reaching for something, reports said.
A family of six was fishing and swimming in a river in Newburyport when the 31-year-old father left the group to get something in the car, according to NBC Boston.
The boy fell near Whittier Bridge, and his mother and 7-year-old sister followed him in an apparent attempt to save him, but they were also swept from the shore, police told television. The father rushed back from the car and also dived into the water, but fighting the current, he returned to shore, the report said.

A fishing boat captain saw the mother and young girl fighting in the river and came to help – as the mother helped her daughter get on the boat before she fell below the surface, unable to get on board, officials said.
CPR was applied when she was towed on board, but she did not respond and was later pronounced dead at Anna Jaques Hospital, according to authorities.
The woman’s identity has not been revealed in anticipation of the family announcement, Newbury Mayor Sean Reardon wrote in his blog.
Divers and a helicopter helped search for the boy on Friday, according to Massachusetts State Police.
