A new conservative group hopes to mobilize moderate voters

A new advocacy group called Center Ice hopes to be the voice of moderate members of the Conservative Party of Canada as the race for a new leader unfolds, its co-founder said.

In an interview with CTV News Channel’s Power Play on Thursday, Rick Peterson, a former leadership candidate, said there was a “wide open” gap in Canada’s political sphere that is not currently represented by any party but is poised to be energized. .

“In our Conservative Party, sometimes those of us who are in the center of temper seem a little alienated or do not seem welcome sometimes. But on the other hand, the Liberal Party opened the center given the fact that they did so [confidence-and-supply agreement] with the NDP, “he said.

“There is a very strong, stable group of Canadians, pragmatic Canadians in the middle who are looking [for a] centrist approach. ”

The Center Ice Group will officially begin its advocacy efforts next Wednesday.

Peterson said he had looked at several candidates who have already given their names, such as Ontario MP Scott Aichison, former Quebec Prime Minister Jean Charest and Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, with strong moderate ideas.

“The lines are clear in the sense that there are candidates for leaders in this race for leaders who fully understand and join the fact that we need to expand the conservative base to the center,” Peterson said.

There are currently eight candidates who have met the first deadline to run in the race, which ends with a vote on September 10th.
