A New York firefighter’s leg was crushed when an SUV overturned after a crash

A New York firefighter’s leg was crushed under an SUV he and other first responders were trying to stabilize after a crash in Midtown on Sunday, law enforcement sources said.

Video of the 3:19 p.m. incident at West 42nd Street and 11th Avenue shows a smoke plumber helping to lift the SUV while his FDNY teammate prepares a yellow beam to steady the vehicle.

The SUV then slid out of the parking lot and footage showed the FDNY member disappearing into the passenger seat before his femur snapped loudly.

The identity of the other victim was not immediately clear, and an NYPD spokesman said the person’s condition was unknown. (Kevin S. Downs for The New York

“As members of Rescue 1 attempted to secure and stabilize the car from above and remove the occupants inside, the driver of one of the vehicles hit the accelerator causing the car to fall and pin firefighter Ryan Warnock underneath,” Acting Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said. said in a statement.

“Firefighter Warnock was extricated and taken to Bellevue, where he is in serious but stable condition being treated for injuries to his leg.”

The NYPD confirmed that there was a collision at that location in which two people were injured.

The identity of the other victim was not immediately available, and a NYPD spokesman said the person’s condition was unknown.

Matthew Vaughn of Bayside, Queens, was heading out for an early dinner when his white Volvo 360 T8 was rear-ended by a black BMW X5. Both he and his wife, Randi, managed to avoid any injuries.

“We felt a huge car hit us from behind – he got on the side of our car,” Van, 62, recalled.

“The fireman tried to get into their car and the weight of the fireman overturned the car and his leg was badly injured so they took him away. The man and his son were still in the car when it happened.

An NYPD source said the unidentified driver of the BMW likely hit the accelerator while first responders worked on the SUV.

Both victims were transported to a local hospital.
