PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – A Philadelphia firefighter died after a building collapsed in Fairhill early Saturday morning. Fire crews initially responded to Block 300 on West Indiana Avenue shortly after 2 a.m. for a fire in the three-story restaurant and apartment building.
The fire was extinguished and the family managed to escape the accident without casualties.
As fire crews continued to work on the structure, just before 3:30 a.m., the structure collapsed while five members of the fire department and an L&I inspector were still inside.
Four firefighters and an L&I inspector were pulled from the rubble and transported to Temple Hospital.
Unfortunately, a Philadelphia firefighter died in the crash.
According to firefighters, this firefighter was 27 years old.
Update: PFD continued to work to rescue 2 trapped members from collapsing at 300 W. Str. Indiana 1 member was transported to the hospital. The other, a 27-year-old veteran, was pronounced on the spot. Our thoughts are with his friends, family and PFD colleagues along with all those affected.
