ATLANA – A man was shot and killed by a police officer in Atlanta after investigators said he shot a security guard trying to escort him from a popular Buckhead restaurant on Wednesday night.

A shooting involving a police officer at a Buckhead restaurant

Atlanta police say a police officer was forced to open fire on a gunman at Fogo De Chao in Buckhead.

“The officer answered a call to 911 about a person disobedient,” said Atlanta Deputy Chief of Police Charles Hampton, adding that officers also noticed that he was armed.

The policeman found the man sitting at the bar, police said. Several witnesses claim that the man drank from a bottle of alcohol and became “violent”.

The man was asked to leave, but did not want to. Police then said the man had started arguing with a police officer and a security guard.

“And suddenly it started to escalate and we started hearing noise and a lot of commotion,” a witness told FOX 5.

The officer deployed his stun gun, but he was infected. Police said the man was eventually detained by security. The man then reached for his pistol and fired at the guard, hitting him, police said. Then the policeman opened fire.

“When the first two shots were fired, we all just got under the table as safely as possible,” one patrol told FOX 5.

Police say an employee shooting took place at the popular Buckhead Restaurant on May 18, 2022 (FOX 5)

“My husband heard a commotion and said ‘I need you to hit the floor’ and grabbed me from the chair,” said one woman, adding that her husband had done so even though he had just undergone knee surgery. “And suddenly everyone just walks over to each other, the babies cry, and the family, the parents lie on the babies.

The security guard was rushed to a district hospital in critical but stable condition.

No one else was hurt.

“There were a lot of people inside the restaurant, but our staff did a great job isolating the site in front of the business, where no one was in danger,” said Deputy Chief Hampton.

“We heard so many shots and my biggest concern was that all these people were here,” the woman said, adding that the outcome could have been very different if the officer had not done his job.

A video shared with FOX 5 shows a Grady EMS stretcher in the bar area of the popular restaurant. Several chairs were overturned and police tape was taped to part of the restaurant.

A second video shared with FOX 5 shows at least one person assisted by medics at the scene.

Piedmont Road was blocked from E. Pace Ferry Road to Peachtree Road for several hours while investigators searched the scene.

The names of those involved have not been released by police.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will investigate the employee’s use of lethal force and will pass the results to the Fulton County Attorney’s Office for review.

The shooting comes days after a weekend of violence with two mass hate-motivated shootings on both sides of the country.

“It’s so unfortunate that our world is coming to this and it’s almost like, ‘Where are you going to find safety?'” The woman said.

The woman said she never wanted to go through something like this again.

“We come here quite often in search of a pleasant, calm atmosphere and we have always had one until tonight,” she said.

But she’s trying for the silver lining.

“The most important thing is that I’m still here,” she said.
