Eating potassium-rich foods, including avocados, bananas and salmon, helps lower blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart attack, research shows.

A study found that a diet high in potassium can reduce the risks of eating salty food and keep hearts healthy, especially in women.

The study looked at 25,000 people in Norfolk with an average age of 58. The researchers divided the participants into three groups based on how much potassium they ate. One group met the recommended potassium intake of 3.5 g per day, while the lowest group consumed only 2 g.

Those in the high-potassium group were 13 percent less likely to be hospitalized or die of heart disease, stroke or heart attack over two decades, researchers found.
