LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (WAVE) – The city of Corridon, Indiana, paid tribute to the fallen volunteer firefighter Jacob McClanahan on Saturday.
The 24-year-old was shot and killed while acting like a good Samaritan to help a stranger whose car appeared stranded.
Funeral services were held at the Old Capitol United Methodist Church near Corridon at 11 a.m. Saturday before the procession.
According to his obituary, McClanahan was a truck driver for Harrison County Highway and a member of several organizations, including the Old Capitol United Methodist Church near Corridon, the Ramsey Volunteer Fire Service, the Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Service and others.
“Everyone loved him, everyone who knew him,” said McClanahan’s friend Paulina Johansen. “He was ready to help anyone, at any time, whatever he needed.
Around 9:30 p.m. Monday, Indiana police said McClanahan stopped to help a Palmyra police officer with a stuck car that ran out of gas on Highway 135.
Within seconds of getting out of their cars, the ISP said they had been shot and McClanahan and Justin Moore, the driver of the blocked car, had been killed.
“I’ve seen these body shots more times than I’d like to,” said Otto Schalk, a Harrison Co. attorney. “I’m trying to make sense of a senseless murder.”
Those who know McClanahan say he died doing what he did best, trying to help.
“He was always just asking if we needed anything,” Johansen said. “And if we did well. I’m just being careless. He was just a great man. He sincerely cares for everyone. He did what he thought was best, and I hate what happened. I really hate what happened. I just don’t want people to think they can’t be a good person yet. He changed the community. He made it a better place here. ”
