The consensus is that the strange-looking bug filmed by Kim McFadden is actually a cicada, just as she suspected.
Many readers have turned to them and all agree on what type of bug it is.
An internet search reveals all sorts of information about cicadas.
In Canada, cicadas are found mainly in temperate regions in the southern parts of the country, although one species, the Canadian cicada (Okanagana canadensis), is found in the northwestern territories.
According to The Canadian Encyclopedia, cicadas are large, sonic insects in the cicada family, best known for their long life cycle.
The loud, distinctive cries of the males are heard during the warm summer days and are unique to each species. Cicada species are annual or periodic, depending on their life cycle. While annual species are observed each year, periodic species appear in 13- or 17-year cycles. In Canada, only annual cicada species are found.
Annual cicadas cause little damage and are not usually considered pests, but periodic cicadas can sometimes cause significant damage to tree nurseries during the germination years. Most people’s interactions with cicadas include noticing their loud calls on hot summer days.
In particular, the constant, noisy call of the common dog’s day cicada is sometimes mistakenly attributed to overhead power lines. In addition to being a sign of summer, cicadas are present in the symbolism throughout history and around the world. Cicadas can also be eaten as food, especially new adults whose bodies are still soft.

Today’s bug of the week is a rather strange-looking creature.
Kim McFadden sent a picture of a bug that looks like it’s from another planet.
“I found this cool little dude cooking in the sun in my Peachland garden the other day. He spent the whole afternoon before leaving for something I’m sure was a suspicious job, haha, “McFadden said in an email that included a photo of the strange insect. “Someone said that maybe a cicada appears as an adult.”
A search on the Internet for a cicada shell found insects that were similar but not identical to McFadden’s little friend.
If you know what this is, send me an email.
And if you had a close encounter with the insect species, send me a picture of [email protected].
