An Echo Bay resident was arrested last night after police said the accused fled while officers visited a Church Street residence for a welfare check.
News release issued by Sault Ste. The Marie Squad of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said that after his arrest, the suspect possessed a substance believed to be cocaine and a knife with a blade.

MACDONALD-MEREDIT-ABERDIN ADDITIONAL CITY – On May 29, 2022, shortly after 8 p.m., members of Sault Ste. The Marie Squad of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), assisted by the First National Police Service Batchewana and the Anishinabek Police Department, responded to a welfare inspection at the Church Street residence in Echo Bay.
Prior to the arrival of the police, the person left the apartment by car and was later found traveling east on Pioneer Road. Officers tried to stop traffic and the car continued on Watson Road and entered Highway 17, traveling west. The car turned onto Church Street in Echo Bay, driving at high speed and continued on Highway 17B, where it became a private alley. The driver tried to get out of the car and escape on foot from the police and was subsequently arrested.
During a search of the vehicle, police found a small amount of suspected cocaine and a knife with a blade. The driver was transported to the local hospital through Sault Ste Marie Paramedic Services for further evaluation.
As a result of the investigation, a 36-year-old man from Echo Bay was charged with: • Dangerous operation, contrary to section 320.13 (1) of the Penal Code (CC) • Flight by a peace officer, contrary to section 320.17 of CC • Possession of prohibited device or ammunition • Possession of a substance on list I – cocaine, contrary to section 4 (1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
The accused is due to appear before the Court of Ontario in Elliott Lake on July 25, 2022.
