Representative Liz Cheney, deputy chairman of the commission since Jan. 6, unveiled a new video from the commission’s interview with Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Millie, saying then-Vice President Mike Pence was the one who ordered the National Guard troops to respond to violence on January 6, 2021, but that he was told by the White House to say that this is former President Trump.
“Vice President Pence – had two or three conversations with Vice President Pence. He was very lively and gave very clear, very direct, unambiguous orders. There was no doubt about that, “Millie said in the video.
“He was very lively, very direct, very firm to Secretary Miller. Get the military down here, get the guards here. Write down this situation and so on, “he added, referring to Pence.
Millie also described his interaction with Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows that day, in stark contrast to those conversations with Pence.
“He said, ‘We have to kill the story that the vice president makes all the decisions.’ We need to establish the story, you know that the president is still in power and that things are stable or stable, or words in that sense, “Millie said in the video, referring to what Meadows said.
“I immediately interpreted this as politics. politics. politics. For me personally, a red flag. No action is taken. But I remember it clearly, “he added.
CNN previously reported that Pence, not Trump, had facilitated the mobilization of National Guard troops in response to the uprising.
The video of Millie’s testimony, who remains the top U.S. military officer now in the Biden administration, speaks to how the commission will seek to highlight what Trump did and did not do as violence spiraled out of control, something CNN previously reported will be the subject of attention during public discussions.
