A shooting at a church in Alabama left two dead, one wounded; suspect in custody

A gunman is in custody after firing on a church in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, around 6:20 p.m. Thursday night, leaving two dead and one wounded.

The shooting took place at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, which hosts Boomer Potluck in the parish hall from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, according to a schedule on the church’s website.

Police say a lone gunman entered the church and opened fire. One person was initially pronounced dead and two others were rushed to a local hospital for treatment. In an update late Thursday night, authorities said one of the two survivors of the shooting had died from his injuries.

“The suspect involved in the incident is in custody,” Vestavia Hills Police Captain Shane Ware said at the scene. “We are not aware of an imminent threat to either the Vestavia Hills community or the neighboring Mountain Brook community.”

Vestavia Hills is a suburb of Birmingham in central Alabama.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey issued a statement after the shooting, saying:

“As we learn of the shocking and tragic loss of life at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Vestavia, we want to pray for the victim’s family, the wounded and the entire church community. I’m glad to hear that the shooter is in custody. It should never happen – in a church, in a shop, in the city or anywhere. “

The victims and the suspect have not yet been identified.
