A soldier from Newfoundland received an official funeral in Belgium

A solemn ceremony is being held today in Belgium for the official burial of a young Newfoundland soldier who has been lying in an unmarked grave for a century.

Private John Lambert of St. John, 17, was killed in August 1917 and buried with several British soldiers near St. Julien in Belgium.

Their remains were discovered during archeological excavations in April 2016, and fortunately a patch on the shoulder was found among the remains, clearly showing the NFLD.

Forensic anthropologist Dr. Sarah Locker, coordinator of the Canadian Armed Forces Victim Identification Program, assisted by archival searches by The Rooms, positively identified Private Lambert’s remains.

Members of Lambert’s family are in Belgium for the ceremony.
