The man, accused of racist shooting at a Buffalo supermarket, has been charged with 25 counts of murder, domestic terrorism and other charges in connection with the May 14 massacre that killed 10 blacks.
The suspect, 18-year-old Peyton Hendron, was arrested shortly after the shooting stopped and he turned himself in to police. He is due to appear in Erie County Court to stand trial on Thursday afternoon, according to District Attorney John J. Flynn.
The 25-count indictment includes both first-degree and second-degree murder charges as hate crimes, as well as three counts of attempted murder and single weapons charges and charges of domestic terrorism. Mr Hendron pleaded not guilty.
Mr Hendron, a staunch white supporter, is accused of shooting 13 people, almost all black, at the Tops supermarket in the predominantly black part of Buffalo, New York’s second-largest city. Three of those shot on Saturday afternoon survived the attack, which was one of the worst racist massacres in recent American history.
In the months leading up to the shooting, Mr Hendron published comments in a private diary on the Discord news site, filled with racist writings, as well as detailed plans for an attack in Buffalo. He included photos of himself posing with an assault weapon that authorities say he used to carry out the shooting.
These writings were shared with a small group of people just before the attack, which Mr Gendron also aired on Twitch, a live gaming site popular with gamers.
Mr Hendron’s attack came just 10 days before another devastating mass shooting, at a primary school in Uwalde, Texas, which killed 21 people, including 19 children. Salvador Ramos, also 18, who died in the shooting, was killed in the attack.
