Police say the shooting in the Edmunds neighborhood, which sent a 19-year-old man to hospital on Friday night, was “targeted” but not related to the gang conflict in the Lower Continent.
Police are investigating a Burnaby shooting that sent a 19-year-old man to hospital with life-threatening injuries on Friday night.
The Burnaby RCMP received a report of a possible shooting in the area of 19th Avenue and Humphreys Avenue around 11:20 p.m., according to a press release.
At the scene, police found a 19-year-old man with a gunshot wound, which police said was not life-threatening.
Police say the victim is not cooperating in their investigation.
He received medical treatment on the spot before being transported to hospital.
Witnesses say they saw a dark-colored vehicle leave the area before police arrived, according to the report.
A similar vehicle was set on fire in North Burnaby shortly afterwards, the statement said.
The Burnaby Fire Department was called in a vehicle fire at 9000 Ashgrove Cres. about 2 a.m. Saturday morning, according to Assistant Fire Chief Gavin Summers.
The crews found “a fully involved car by the roadside,” he told NOW.
After putting out the fire, he said firefighters had left the burnt car in the care of the Burnaby RCMP, as it was considered an “alleged vehicle for the crime earlier in the evening.”
“Everything went to the RCMP,” Summer said.
Police investigators do not believe the incident is related to the gang conflict in the Lower Continent, but described it as “targeted.”
“This type of event can be scary for anyone,” says Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Mike Kalange said in a statement. “However, we do not believe that this targeted attack poses an additional danger to the public.”
Anyone who has a dash camera video in the area of 19th Avenue and Humphreys Avenue between 11pm and midnight should call the Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999.
