A Toronto police officer faces several criminal charges

Toronto police say they have filed criminal charges against one of them after a veteran officer allegedly provided confidential information to a member of the public about others.

The officer has served at TPS for 20 years and was last assigned to the 12th Division, police said in a press release announcing the allegations Wednesday.

Investigators allege that between 5 November 2020 and 28 January 2021, the officer accessed internal computer databases “many times” in order to provide “confidential police information” to an unnamed person.

An investigation into professional standards of the employee’s alleged actions began on December 2, 2021, after which he was removed for payment.

Const. Ricardo Gomez, 51, of Vaughan, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with four counts of misconduct, two counts of unauthorized computer use and one count of malice.

Gomez will appear in the courtroom in Toronto on July 6.

At the same time, Gomez was also charged under the Police Services Act with two counts of defamatory conduct, three counts of breach of trust and two counts of disobedience.

Gomez will answer these charges pending the completion of criminal proceedings, Toronto police said.

He remains suspended from work under pay under the Police Services Act.
