The Waterloo City Museum will welcome Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen during a free public event on July 23 at the Waterloo Recreation Memorial, 101 Father David Bauer, PhD, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Coinciding with his current exhibition, Health in Space and in partnership with the Canadian Museums of Science and Innovation, the day will include a fair of STEAM space suppliers with practical activities and crafts.
An experienced fighter pilot in the Canadian Armed Forces, Colonel Hansen completed his basic training in 2011 and participated in the European Space Agency’s CAVES program, during which he lived underground. He was also a member of the crew of NEEMO 19, where he lived and worked on the ocean floor in the Aquarius habitat near Key Largo, Florida, simulating deep space exploration.
Hansen was part of the 20th class of astronauts of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) along with Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques. While on a mission, he represents NASA’s Canadian Space Agency and works at the Mission Management Center as capcom, the voice between Earth and the International Space Station (ISS).
The local event on July 23 will be held at the Sun Life Financial Arena, with Hansen’s conversation starting at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
Local companies and educational presenters such as the Gustav Bacos Institute of Perimeter and Observatory at the University of Waterloo and the Museum of Earth Sciences will provide opportunities for STEAM training and space research.
Tomatosphere University and Let’s Talk Science teams will present their tomatoes in the space program and lunar research.
Other participants include the Mission of the Faculty of Education of Wilfried Lorie on the Moon, LAUNCH Waterloo, Indus Space Inc. and the YouTube sensation Dave’s Armor.
The day will also include Rover racing and 3D printing from InkSmith.
