An Ohio woman was stung by a buffalo after approaching the animal while visiting Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, park officials said Tuesday.
The 25-year-old was visiting Grove City National Park, Ohio, about 20 minutes outside of Columbus.
Park officials say the woman, whose name has not been released, has approached 10 feet from a female bison in a nearby alley. The animal then stabbed her and threw her 10 feet into the air.
She was treated by on-site emergency medical personnel at the park and was later transferred to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center by ambulance with a stab wound and other injuries.
Two other people were 25 feet from the same bison, but it is unclear if they were injured.
The buffalo, which can weigh up to 2,000 pounds, has injured more people than any other animal in Yellowstone, according to park officials. They warn visitors to stand at least 25 yards from all large wildlife, including sheep, deer and elk, and 100 yards from bears and wolves.
Bison are known to be unpredictable animals that can be loaded at any time and can run up to 35 miles per hour, but this is the first reported incident this year of a bison that destroys an individual.
This article was amended on June 1, 2022 to clarify that a woman’s health status remains unclear.
