Mounties is investigating a murder after a woman was found dead at a residence near a primary school in southern Nanaimo after a quarrel Monday night.
Nanaimo RCMP officers were called to a home on Eighth Street, behind Park Elementary School, around 10pm on June 20 after receiving a disturbance signal.
According to a press release from the Nanaimo RCMP with very little information, after officers entered the home, they found a dead elderly woman and later arrested a man suspected of murder.
Const. Gary O’Brien, a spokesman for the Nanaimo RCMP, confirmed in a brief press conference that a man had been arrested for murder, but noted that they had not yet been charged.
“This person is in custody and no charges have been filed so far,” he said.
O’Brien said there would be no more information as the investigation is early and no charges have been filed.
“At this point, we don’t believe there is any further risk to the public,” he said. “We are also not releasing any additional information about this, because it is too early in the investigation.
Police have not yet announced the relationship between the victim and the suspect, or whether they knew each other.
Tommy Paul lives on 8th Street. He says police questioned him and other neighbors this morning.
“It’s really shocking. This is crazy. It’s right at the end of the dead end. It’s always been a pretty quiet street, “Paul said
But neighbors say they knew something was wrong when numerous police cars, two ambulances and a fire truck arrived on their streets Monday night.
“We wandered a bit on the road and one of the cops came in with the window down and said come back to the house right away and we were fine, so we all went home and hung out the front window,” said Dave Sheeple, another neighbor.
Sheepel says he saw a man he had never seen walk down the street last night shortly before police arrived.
“About 20 minutes later, half an hour later, we saw the same man taken to the back of a police car,” Sheeppel said.
Police spent much of the day working on a search warrant to enter the property.
You can see taxis parked on the driveway of the house. Police say the driver is not the victim.
The 2,800-square-foot home is located on 4.3 acres and sold in April for $ 2.25 million. Its deadline is September.
The RCMP is expected to be in place by the end of Tuesday and all day Wednesday.
This is the second homicide investigation in the city this year. In February, James Turok was charged with murder after a Buzz Coffee House staff member was found dead inside.
