A1 (M) closed south in Durham County after a big truck fire – latest updates

The A1M was closed south at night as firefighters dealt with a fierce truck fire on the roadway. The closure was confirmed at 2:20 a.m. Friday morning, and a section of the highway was still closed more than two hours later.

The truck exploded in A1M flames between intersections 59 and 58. The driver of the truck managed to escape unscathed from the flames. It is unknown at this time what caused the fire.

The fire was brought under control and at 3.30 am the emergency services were waiting to remove the burnt remains from the National Highways, which announced at 4.35 am that the road between J57 and J58 was reopened. It remains closed between J59 and J58.

In an update at 4.30am, the Inrix Traffic Information Service said: “A1 (M) Southbound closed due to restoration work and an earlier truck fire between J59 A167 (Aycliffe) and J58 A68 (Burtree). The traffic is doing well. The closure was reduced to J58 after work was completed overnight on the entrance road. Deviation – traffic to be diverted through Aycliffe Village via B6444 and A6072 to rejoin A1 (M) at J58. “

Durham RPU tweeted earlier: “We are currently working on a fire truck trailer on the side of A1M between 59 and 58 south, with @CDDFRSSouthbound closed, moving north as best as possible with @HighwaysNEAST. The driver shook, but unharmed! ! “
