Aaron Donald signs new contract with Rams, All-Pro DT becomes the highest paid non-QB in NFL history

Aaron Donald is not only ready to give up potential retirement to help Rams in their attempt to repeat themselves as Super Bowl champions, but now he will be paid generously for it. The All-Pro defensive game has agreed to rework the remaining three years of its contract with the Los Angeles Rams, making it the highest paid non-QB in NFL history.

In particular, Donald will receive a $ 40 million increase from Rams and will receive a total of $ 95 million under his contract, which runs until the end of the 2024 season. Donald will be guaranteed $ 65 million over the next two seasons. As the contract is structured, Donald will have the option of either retiring or returning in 2024 for an additional $ 30 million guaranteed. The deal also includes a trade-off clause, according to ESPN.

“I’m locked up again to go get us another ring. Why not? ”Donald said in a video the team released after announcing the deal. “At SoFi Stadium, I shudder to think about it. Let’s go to work.”

This restructuring of the contract has been working essentially since the clock hit zero in Los Angeles’ victory over Bengal in the Super Bowl LVI. In the course of these negotiations, there have even been reports that Donald will be content with retiring if he does not receive a raise that better reflects the current market and where he stands is perhaps the best defender in the entire NFL. There were also questions about Donald’s presence at the mandatory Rams mini-camp. However, his presence is no longer in doubt, as he reportedly reviewed and signed his new deal, ensuring he will return to defend his LA title.

“It’s not great news, it’s phenomenal, exceptional, any good adjective you can put around it,” head coach Sean McVeigh said of Donald’s deal with SiriusXM. “But it’s a big deal and he deserved it. And he really is one of them in my opinion. So much for me, for our organization. I think the respect he has earned in this league from the boys who did it is at such a high level, what he has achieved in his eight years is incomparable.

“And so [we] he wanted to be able to find a solution, you know, to get him to take care of it. To continue leading the way for our team, for our defense. And, you know, we had the feeling he was moving in the right direction when he was at our wedding on Saturday night. So a lot of good things have happened to me in the last few days. “

Donald is no stranger to zeroing the market on the defensive side of the ball. As early as August 2018, the now 31-year-old signed a six-year extension of $ 135 million, which includes a guaranteed $ 87 million. At the time, that made Donald the highest paid defender in NFL history, but he has since surpassed before this last deal.

Pete’s product has spent his entire career with Rams after they selected him as the No. 13 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Upon his arrival, Donald established himself as one of the greatest defenders of all time and undoubtedly a member of the Hall of Fame. In his career, Donald has been named Defender of the Year three times, All-Pro seven times and a Pro Bowl player in all eight seasons of his career.
