Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (right) said Friday that he expects new laws to be passed in response to this week’s shooting, which killed 21 people at a primary school.
“Are we expecting any laws to come out of this devastating crime?” The answer is yes. Absolutely yes, “said Abbott.
Asked to convene a special session of the legislature in response to the shooting, he said “all options are on the table”.
After the shooting, Republicans focused their messages on school security, while Democrats called for greater gun control.
With further pressure on measures that Texas may see, Abbott focuses on mental health and safety at school.
“You can expect a solid discussion, and I hope that laws will be passed that I will sign on health care in this state,” Abbott said. “There are a number of health problems that are related to those who commit weapons crimes.”
Abbott seemed more resilient to measures aimed at checking the biography of weapons and new laws on the purchase of rifles.
Abbut pointed out other school shootings in which the inspection did not stop a shooter, as the perpetrator passed the inspection.
“Anyone who suggests focusing on past checks instead of mental health, I guess, is wrong,” Abbott said.
Regarding rifles, Abbott said that “since Texas is a state, an 18-year-old has had the opportunity to buy a long pistol, a rifle.”

“And since then, it seems like we’ve only had school shootings in the last decade or two,” Abbott said. “For a century and a half, 18-year-olds could buy rifles and we didn’t have school shootings, but now we do. Maybe we’re focusing on the wrong thing. “
The shooting in Uwalde, Texas, sparked national outrage as more details emerged about police waiting in front of the primary school building while the shooter was inside.
Abbott told a news conference that he was “angry” at the initial “inaccurate” information he received about the police response to the shooting, as he had previously said authorities handled the event “bravely”.
