A captain with a reserve group working with Air Cadets faces nine charges, including sexual assault with a weapon and sexual interference, Ottawa police said.
Adrian Schmidt, 47, was indicted on Tuesday after an investigation into sexual assault, which police said took place between January 2020 and June 2022.
The alleged crimes were committed against two children under the age of 16 at a man’s home in rural Richmond, Ottawa, police said.
Police say Schmid was a captain in the Cadet Organization’s Office of Administration and Training (COATS), a branch of the Canadian Armed Forces Reserve, working with the Ottawa Air Cadets.
He met with one of the victims through the program, police said.
“After the Ottawa Police Department informed us of the arrest and investigation, the member was immediately advised to suspend all activities under the Cadet Program and contact the Cadets,” said Daniel Le Butille, head of media relations at the Ministry of National Defense and the Canadian Ministry of Defense. armed forces.
“Additional administrative measures concerning this article are ongoing.”
Schmidt began the program in 2003 and has worked with COATS for approximately 19 years, according to Le Bouthillier.
Le Butilier said all adults in direct contact with cadets adhere to a high standard of behavior and are required to undergo police file checks and screening in the vulnerable sector every five years.
Schmidt is charged with two counts of sexual intercourse, two counts of sexual assault, three counts of inviting sexual touch, sexual assault with a weapon and providing sexually explicit material to a person under 16 years of age.
He is due to appear in court on Wednesday.
