A fugitive murder suspect and a female correctional officer who allegedly helped him escape from Alabama jail were detained Monday in Indiana after a car chase, authorities said.

The policeman, who received an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, was taken to hospital and later died, they said.
Casey White, a 38-year-old inmate, surrendered after a vehicle in which he and Vicki White crashed after being chased by federal law enforcement in Indiana, said Sheriff Rick Singleton of Lauderdale County, Alabama.
Vicki White, a 56-year-old assistant director of correction and a suspected accomplice, is driving and appears to have “inflicted a gunshot wound,” said Dave Wedding, sheriff of Vanderburg County, Indiana, where the two were arrested. Casey White was slightly injured, he told CNN.
Vicky White has died at the hospital, the Conder’s Office of Vanderburg County said. It did not specify the cause of death.

Officials say Casey White has been ordered to be transported back to Alabama to face new charges.

Unmarried Casey White and Vicki White are considered fugitives who are armed and dangerous, and persecution is considered a top priority for the U.S. Marshals Service.
U.S. Marshal Matt Keeley said the vehicle chase ended when a member of the U.S. Marshals Task Force got into a Cadillac driven by Vicki White, CNN reported. The car then overturned, he said, according to the publication.
Casey White, previously charged with knife death in September 2020, will be charged with absconding, Singleton said. Vicki White, a 17-year veteran of adjustments, was close to retiring.

“This escape was obviously well planned and calculated,” Singleton said, adding that there was no evidence of outside help.
Casey White was already serving a sentence for crimes from 2015, including breaking into a home and stealing cars.
He was handcuffed and arrested by Vicki White, who was leaving Muscle Shoals Prison in Alabama, about 65 miles west of Huntsville, in late April. It was then thought that she was transporting him from the detention center to the mental court building.
Authorities say the two disappeared after a patrol car was found parked in a mall.
