Wearing custom-made green bandanas emblazoned with the words “I will not back down,” they marched from the Capitol to the Court, which has been cordoned off for weeks, shortly after the draft ruling overturning Roe v. Wade expired.
Within two minutes of their arrival, police began ordering them to “cease and desist.” Instead, they sat in the street and were led away one by one by officers chanting: “The people united shall never be divided.”
US Capitol Police tweeted: “Protesters begin blocking First Street NE. Blocking traffic is against the law, so officers will give our standard three warnings before making an arrest.”
Capitol Police later said they had arrested a total of 34 people, including 16 members of Congress.
Among those arrested:
- Assistant Speaker Catherine Clark of Massachusetts
- Ayana Presley from Massachusetts
