Amanda Nunes understands Dana White’s criticism: ‘I need to pull myself together’

Amanda Nunes believes there is some truth to Dana White’s recent comments about her quest to remain the best in the world.

UFC 269 in December 2021 made history when Nunes suffered a shocking second-round choke loss to Julianna Pena, losing her bantamweight title (watch the full fight). The first round of the match was business as usual for the Lioness, who handily defeated the Venezuelan Fox. However, the second round was a completely different story as the champion seemed to tire quickly and began to engage in fun that eventually caused her demise.

Since then, many takeaways have been shared about the performance. Perhaps the most controversial came from UFC President Dana White, who expressed how Nunes is no longer the same “hungry savage” she was before her peak as a dominant champion.

“I feel like sometimes Dana says something and people really pick on the little parts that are going to make him look bad,” Nunes told ESPN. “I feel like what he says sometimes, if you look at it that way, yeah, I feel very comfortable. And you want to enjoy your life when you do all these things that I did. I want to travel, I want to see my family, I want to rest a little bit, and then the thing is that you cut back a little bit.

“When you’ve done everything I’ve done, one day you’re going to relax a little bit,” she continued. “Now I have done so much that I can rest a little. I dominated, I became a double champion, I killed all these girls in front of me, I cleaned up the division, so I slowed down too, yeah. Until Juliana came into the picture, here we are again. I’m really pumped for this fight and like Dana said, I need to pull myself together. Now I’m fired up.”

Nunes will get the chance to right the wrongs made at UFC 269 against Pena this weekend (Saturday, July 30, 2022) at UFC 277 in Dallas, Texas.
