One of Amber Heard’s lawyers blamed social media haters and “one-sided” media coverage of Wednesday’s big verdict after the jury sided mostly with Johnny Depp in the former couple’s defamation lawsuit.
“She was demonized,” lawyer Elaine Bredehoft told NBC’s TODAY in her first interview since the sentence was overturned. “It was awful.”
Bredehoft also said there was no way Hurd could pay the net $ 8.35 million he now owes Depp as compensation.
“Absolutely not,” Bredehoft said.
The jury sided with Depp in all of his defamation lawsuits and ordered Hurd to pay him $ 15 million, although the judge reduced that to $ 10.35 million. The jury also agreed to one of Hurd’s three defamation lawsuits against Depp and awarded her $ 2 million in damages.
According to Bredehoft, the first thing Hurd said after the verdict was announced was: “I am very sorry for all these women there. This is an obstacle for all women inside and outside the courtroom. “
“She feels the weight of it,” Bredehoft added.
Bredehoft accused Depp’s team of trying to “demonize Amber” while suppressing what she said was evidence of 12 cases of domestic violence.
“We had a huge amount of evidence that was suppressed in this case, which was the case in the United Kingdom,” Bredehoft said.
An earlier trial in the United Kingdom was in favor of Hurd instead of Depp, and Bredehoft argued that this was because it involved more than Hurd’s evidence.
Hurd’s lawyer also blamed the media coverage and the social media conversation for the jury’s verdict. Much of this conversation included pro-Depp and anti-Hurd videos and memes online.
“They come home every night, they have families, the families are on social media,” Bredehoft said. “We had a 10-day break in the middle because of the court conference. There’s no way they weren’t affected.”
Bredehoft also said she was upset by the cameras in the courtroom, which turned the case into an international television trial, while inspiring countless videos on TikTok and other reaction videos.
“It’s like the Roman Colosseum looking at this whole case,” she said. “It made him a zoo.”
Bredehoft says Hurd wants to appeal the decision and has “excellent reasons”.
