Three people were killed and three others were injured when the car they were riding was hit by an Amtrak train in East Bay on Sunday afternoon, officials said.
The tragedy occurred around 1 p.m., in the unincorporated area of Brentwood, when a car crossed the railroad tracks near Block 3000 on Orwood Road and was hit by a westbound train heading from Stockton to Martinez, according to Steve Oberth, a fire marshal in the East Contra Costa Fire.
Three people were pronounced dead on the spot, Ober said. Two of the three survivors were seriously injured, with one adult taken by air to a hospital and one child taken to the hospital by land transport.
Amtrak representatives did not immediately send a request for comment.
Ober said the collision took place in a rural area where there were no railway guards or crossing signals.
“It’s a bad crossing,” he said, adding that trains could travel through the area at about 80 miles per hour. “It’s just a recipe for disaster, unfortunately.”
The names of the victims were not disclosed, but authorities said the dead were believed to be adults.
This is an evolving story.
