An Indiana man has been hailed as a hero after saving four young children and their 18-year-old sister from a house fire early Monday morning.

Nick Bostick of Lafayette was passing by on his way home when he saw flames coming from the house around 12:30 a.m.

“I saw the fire on the balcony, so I slammed on the brakes, pulled into the driveway and ran into the house from the back. I was yelling, ‘Is anybody there?'” Bostic told Fox 59.

Bostick rushed into the burning home and saw four people. He immediately helped get them to safety, but was then told that one of the children was still missing.

Bostic rushed back into the home only to encounter growing flames and thick black smoke.

“The smoke just came out of nowhere. It was pitch black, pitch black. The heat was excruciating,” Bostic said, according to Fox 59 .

Bostic was able to find the child after hearing a faint cry. He grabbed the child and jumped out of the second floor window to escape the flames.

“I grabbed her and held her tight and ran up those stairs as a running back for the Colts. I jumped out the window,” Bostic said.

Dramatic police body camera footage shows the moment Bostick leaves the home with the 6-year-old. Bostic suffered cuts, burns and blisters on his legs and arm. He was treated in hospital on Wednesday after several days of treatment.

“When I wake up every morning, I have something to remind me why I’m here, still alive. Why God has me here,” Bostic told News 18. “He’s using me as his instrument tonight.”

All five family members were unharmed. Bostic, 25, said he doesn’t consider himself a hero and said he was just a regular guy who did what he had to do.

“If I was up there, trapped, or sleeping and there was a fire, I would hope that the person driving would consider doing the same thing if they could,” Bostic said.

Lt. Randy Sherer of the Lafayette Police Department said Bostic’s heroic actions saved lives.
