Rangers have announced that former Scotland goalkeeper Andy Gorham has died aged 58.
Gorham, who won 43 caps for the national team and five league titles at Ibrox, recently revealed he had been diagnosed with terminal oesophageal cancer. He said doctors gave him about six months to live after turning down the chance of chemotherapy that could have extended his life an extra three months.
“Today, Rangers are deeply saddened to announce the death of our legendary goalkeeper Andy Gorham after a short battle with cancer,” a club statement read. “In a supporters’ poll in 1999 he was voted the greatest Rangers goalkeeper of all time and after his retirement he was still a regular around Ibrox on match days and still wowed the crowd with some memorable performances for the the legends.
“The thoughts of the directors, management, players and staff are with Andy’s family today and we would like their privacy to be respected at this sad time.”

Bury-born Gorham began his career at Oldham before moving north to play for Hibernian between 1987 and 1991. He made 260 appearances for Rangers between 1991 and 1998, where he was known simply as ‘The Goalkeeper’. winning five league titles, including three Scottish Cups and two League Cups. He won 43 caps for Scotland and was their first choice goalkeeper at both Euro 92 and Euro 96.
After Rangers, he played for Notts County, Sheffield United, Motherwell, Manchester United, Hamilton, Coventry, Oldham, Queen’s of South and Elgin. Gorham was part of the Manchester United side that won the Premier League in 2001, making two appearances for the Red Devils.
At Queen of the South, he became the first player to complete the Scottish medal haul when he won a Challenge Cup medal to go along with the Premiership, Scottish Cup and League Cup winners’ awards.

He also won international caps for Scotland as a cricketer. Gorham remains the only person to have played a first-class international cricket match as well as a major international football match for Scotland.
His former Manchester United team-mate Gary Neville tweeted: “Terribly sad news for Andy Gorham. RIP Andy. Love to all your family.”
